If you are planning to avail private car, do ensure that the driver has experience of driving in hilly regions and is not under the influence of any substance. Do make it a point that the driver has gone on a trip before and is fully aware of the roads. In terms of broad gauge line, the nearest railway station is Ambala (200km) or Chandigarh (250 km) from the capital of the country.

The nearest airport is Kullu that is around 50 km away from Manali. Air India operates flights from Kullu from Delhi. But the service is very irregular and the fares can go over the roof. From the airport you can exercise an option of a pre-paid taxi which is the best way to reach Manali. You can also go to Kullu and take a bus from there.
